Create a modern version of this traditional quilt and
you could be eligible to win a Husqvarna Viking Limited Edition Eden Rose™
250C sewing machine, valued at $1,699, plus a fabric, threads, books and notions

This traditional quilt, Bears in the Roses, was designed by creative editor
Lori Baker using alternating blocks – a bear’s paw from issue 9/10 (July
1970) of Quilters Newsletter, and arrowheads from issue 5 (March 1970). The fabric
collections used are Petal by Tanya Whelan, Pirouette by Verna Mosquera, Barefoot
Roses by Tanya Whelan and Fresco, all from FreeSpirit.
Your modern interpretation of Bears in the Roses could be a winner!
All quilt entries must measure a total of 144 inches around the perimeter. For example,
36" x 36", 22" x 50", 32" x 40", etc. Quilts may also have curved borders. Entries
must incorporate a focal fabric from Rowan, FreeSpirit or Ty Pennington Impressions.
What is modern?
It’s a mindset, but modern quilt characteristics often include brightly
colored fabrics, solid or print; curved pieces; modified block arrangements and
scale of blocks; improvisational and liberated piecing; and sometimes even exact
and measured piecing following a pattern or incorporating an original design. Judges’
decisions are final.
To enter the Traditional to Modern Quilt Challenge, complete the
Entry Form and follow instructions to submit your entry.
Required information:
• photo of quilt
• description of the quilt’s modern aesthetic
• the quilt’s name
• focal fabrics used
• your name, address, phone number and email address.
Preliminary judging will be by photo. All finalists must send finished
quilts to Quilters Newsletter for final judging. Enter by 5 p.m. Mountain time,
September 10, 2013.
Four winners will be chosen: Grand Prize, Best Use of Fabric, Editors’
Choice and Viewers’ Choice.
By entering the Challenge, quiltmakers agree to allow Quilters Newsletter to share
their names and contact information with certain Challenge sponsors.
